Who We Are

The roots of Essential Trading go back to 1971 when the first Harvest store opened in Bath, inspired by a catering venture at Glastonbury Fayre that year.  Since the 1991 merger of two worker co-ops, Bristol-based Nova Wholefoods and Bath Wholefood Co., Essential has become one of the largest worker co-operatives in the UK and a true pioneer in the manufacturing and distribution of vegetarian, vegan, organic, sustainable and free-from produce, sourced from around the world.  Our 'all in it together' philosophy is at the heart of what we do.

Essential Lorry delivering by the seaside

The late 1970s and early 1980s saw business grow exponentially for Harvest/Bath Wholefood Co. and then Nova.  Wholefood distributors and manufacturers were few and far between and the recognised worker co-operatives quickly gained popularity. The introduction of a unique muesli mix, created in-house by Nova, was particularly successful. A range of Harvest pre-packs was developed, as well as a wholesale cash and carry service incorporating a small number of daily delivery runs. The Harvest shop went from strength to strength, eventually leading to the opening of Harvest Bristol on Gloucester Road, and both are trading successfully to this day.

Bulk commodities, herbs and spices, and a wide range of wholefood brands were supplied with a focus on good, unprocessed, additive-free, organic and vegetarian food at affordable and competitive prices.  In 1987, Nova moved to our current Fishponds warehouse to accommodate the growth in product range and volume, and in 1991 were joined by the Bath crew to create Essential Trading Co-operative Ltd.  Another new chapter had begun!
