Support Our Community: Stepping Stones Food & Wellbeing

Stepping Stones is a food bank, and runs alongside a food club, pay-what-you-can cafe, craft clubs and second hand clothing rails. The team behind all of this have been looking into the needs of the community, and focussing on providing healthy food and a space to connect for those most at need in the community.
Stepping Stones Food & Wellbeing

It was a busy day for Stepping Stones when we arrived into St John's Church, just off the Totnes high street. The building is transformed into a multi-use space, where people can meet and connect, create and access healthy food and supplies needed for the week ahead.

Stepping Stones Food Bank are making deliberate choices around what food they will provide for people who need it, as many people who use the food bank have not had access to healthy food for a long time.
Known as the 'Essential Project', Stepping Stones now provides a majority of healthier options, which is a real step forward for those who have other challenges in their lives - and it has been met with overwhelming support.

We spoke to Lorraine and Kit from Stepping Stones to talk about the services they provide, and how they have impacted the local community.

The Warm Hearts Cafe is pay-what-you-can, and offers delicious vegan soups, sandwiches, cakes and hot drinks; inviting everyone and anyone in the community to come together. Lorraine explained that this is an important centre for many people in the community and, for some, the only reason they will leave the house.
Going beyond supplying food, Stepping Stones Food and Wellbeing provides free second-hand clothing and craft sessions each week with all materials provided, allowing everyone to have access to the service.

While we were visiting, the team received a cheque from a small independent car dealership in Totnes. 'The Family Car Guy' Sam is taking part in a 1,000 mile rally across Europe and has raised over £2,000 for the Totnes Food Bank. This was such a great example of the community coming together to support families and individuals in the area who are struggling with the cost of living.
