The Story Behind Happy Butter
Rupert and Kate started Happy Butter from their kitchen at home in 2016. Rupert had started making ghee for Kate as part of a lifestyle change to try to improve her health. The ghee he made was so delicious that they thought they might try to sell some. The first step was Soil Association certification. Once this was established, they went to their local health food shop and local farm shop with some samples, and they have been supplying these places along with many other independent retailers ever since.
From a Kitchen Experiment to a Growing Craft
Happy Butter quickly outgrew their home kitchen and moved their kitchen workshop to a commercial unit in 2017. After entering local and national taste awards, they received much interest and demand for their ghee.
Small Batches, Always
They have built their business on their values of: only organic, only UK butter (preferably as local as possible), and always cooked in small batches. Even as Happy Butter has grown and now many hundreds of jars are made each week, the cooking still happens in small batches. This is reflected in the flavour and quality of the ghee.
Proudly Independent, From Farm to Jar
Happy Butter works closely with independent dairy farms and prefers to source their organic butter directly this way whenever possible. When someone buys from an independent high street health food shop that has been supplied by Essential, the chain of supply has been truly independent: from organic farmer to Happy Butter to Essential to independent shop to customer. This is a chain that Happy Butter is really very proud to be part of and support.

A Food with Ancient Roots
Ghee is a clarified butter that has been used in the Indian sub-continent for millennia, not just for food, but in the wider cultural, religious and medicinal realms. It’s one of Ayurveda’s cornerstones. What started out as a need to deal with cream going off has led to one of the world’s most amazing superfoods. Typically, ghee was made in the home or in religious settings in small batches. It was the most common cooking fat available. Nut and seed oils were not common or readily available
Everyday Cooking, Made Better
Ghee can be used in place of standard cooking oil in every scenario. From bulletproof coffees, roasting potatoes, frying pancakes, and as an alternative to oil in any dinnertime cooking.
Nourishing, Versatile, and Easy to Digest
Suitable for Vegetarian, Keto, Paleo, GAPS, FODMAP, Whole30, Banting and traditional Ayurvedic diets and practices, Happy Butter organic ghee is tested to be below the level of detection for casein and lactose. It is abundant in vitamins A, D, E & K, is a very stable fat, and can withstand high-temperature cooking without burning. It can also be used as a lactose- and casein-free spread.
Made with Care, Every Step of the Way
Happy Butter is proud to be the producer of such a delicious and special product. They value and take great care in every step, from sourcing the butter to making the ghee themselves to the mindful selling of the final product.
