It’s a gloriously sunny day in Chipping Sodbury and as I walk into Nature’s Choice, situated on the wide, old market style high street, I am greeted by big smiles from shop owner Karen Morris and her daughter Ellie.

The shop exudes a warm and inviting atmosphere. Shelves are lined with an array of meticulously sourced local products and remedies and there’s a distinct charm in the way everything is displayed, reflecting the care and dedication Karen puts into her business.

The sense of community is palpable as local residents pop in to pick up their weekly essentials, share a friendly chat, and sometimes seek advice on healthy living. Karen, with her extensive knowledge of natural remedies and holistic health, engages in lively conversations with regular customers throughout the day as Ellie, home from university for the summer, engages in lively conversation at the till as she aids customers with their purchases.

It’s immediately clear to me that Nature’s Choice isn’t just a shop; it’s a hub for those passionate about health and wellness. Karen's enthusiasm is infectious as she explains the origin of their products, often sharing stories about the local producers they support.

As I browse the shop, I’m captivated by the handwritten messages scattered among the shelving and around the store, each sharing a wholesome message or practical advice on incorporating these fantastic items into daily life. This personal touch distinguishes Nature’s Choice from larger, impersonal health food chains, cementing its status as a cherished staple in the Chipping Sodbury community.

I spoke with Karen about what her business means to her and the local community in Chipping Sodbury.

How long have you been in Chipping Sodbury?

There has been a health shop in Chipping Sodbury for a number of years now. I worked here part time for eight years prior to taking over the business three years ago.

Tell us about what it's like to be a small business owner...

Owning a small business comes with its ups and downs. On one hand, it’s incredibly rewarding, but on the other, it can be quite challenging. Every aspect of the business falls under my responsibility, whether I am serving customers directly or working behind the scenes to ensure growth and success. As a single parent to older children, maintaining a work-life balance, whenever possible, is also extremely important to me.

What is your high street like and how has it changed over the years?

Every shop is different. Chipping Sodbury is an ancient market town. The high street is thought to be one of the widest streets in England in part because of the substantial market held in the middle ages. The town has a lovely, welcoming feel and is very picturesque, situated on the edge of the Cotswolds. It's a great place for local shopping, with many independent businesses on the high street. We support and encourage each other, aided by a strong chamber of commerce and various local groups that organise events throughout the year. These efforts help increase footfall and promote the town to all ages. I appreciate the growing awareness of supporting local businesses to ensure the high street's survival.

Can you tell us a but about your customers?

The high street here is relaxed and less busy than it used to be. However, people are willing to spend more on high-quality products and shop locally. We attract a diverse range of customers from all ages and backgrounds, who all appreciate a warm welcome. I like to think they feel valued and listened to. Although I have a small team, we are very knowledgeable and share the same ethos.

How does your shop differ from others in Chipping Sodbury?

I’m always looking for ways to improve the customer experience in my shop. We aim to be a friendly and welcoming place to shop and a place where you always see a friendly face.
